Friday 28 September 2007. Day 39. Hiroshima – Kyoto. Kyoto Garden Hotel.

Lou still ill. Leave the comfort of the comfort inn and head to Kyoto on the Shinkansen. See the famous Himeji Palace from the train, arriving at our hotel by lunchtime – too early to check in. We leave our bags and go and explore, looking for some lunch places recommended in Rough Guide. Can’t find any of them, despite circling whole blocks, and in the end, find a decent looking Italian place (we asked for help in a shop around the corner and one of the staff came out of the shop and guided us to the door) and have a nice salad and pizza / pasta.

Afterwards, we go and look for Ieuan's record shop, which we find after 2 sets of directions from helpful shop owners. Wander round some of the more traditional streets of Kyoto, with hanging lanterns and wooden fronts, buying some chopsticks as souvenirs and getting some pics of some interesting, but typical Japanese outfits! Went to do a bit of shopping in the usual places, before heading back to the hotel.

Check in to the room to Ieuan’s cries of “uurrrggghh” as we open the door to reveal the dirty threadbare carpet! The bathroom is smaller than usual but still plastic and the toilet even has a remote control for all the additional functions! We use the internet and then go out to find a recommended Indian for tea. Find it easily and have an ok meal, then wander round to see Kyoto at night. Stop to look at all the people gathered down by the river – looks like maybe some music will be playing later. Stop at the 7-11 to “willy nilly” spend hundreds of pounds purchasing items for breakfast the next morning (as someone was accused!).
