Up early for breakfast and internet use before leaving for the bus at 9am ish. Breakfast ok, but internet busy by same couple all morning. Pack bags and wait at reception at 9am. Dropped at bus stop and wait with other travelers (including dreadly/crusty type and partner who had been staying at the same place as us) for 45 minutes until bus arrives.
We get on first, along with Dreadly, and a Spanish couple, leaving another couple, with no ticket, behind. Once on, and the cheeky locals had moved back to their rightful seats, we all got seated and headed off along the 300km of partly unsealed and damaged road to KK. Listened to music, stopped for lunch at roadside café (included in price) – rice and veg / eggs etc, and dropped off Dreadly at Mount K park. Arrived at KK at about 3.15pm – no one appeared from Ideal holidays to meet us as planned, so shared taxi to town with Spanish couple. Dropped at KK Daya hotel and check in to odd L shaped room. Lou thinks it ok – Ieuan hates it. Get air con on and cool down, then head down to find the “vibrant, bustling” harbourfront as described in the LP… Eat at North Indian restaurant, and head back to room via night stalls and market. Ieuan takes instant dislike to KK and after the aforementioned description, it’s not quite as pleasant as expected!
Receive phonecall at 9pm from ideal holidays (having tried to contact them several times earlier in the day and Lou being convinced that the $400 USD paid up front to climb Mt Kinabalu had all been a con) who told us that we would be picked up at 5.30am for our 2 day excursion.
